Vitamin C, The Most Successful Vitamin for Healing By Dr Andrew Saul

Benefits of Vitamin C

Progress takes time, unfortunately. Fresh fruit was known to cure scurvy by 1753, yet governments ignored the fact for nearly 100 years. Countless thousands died in the meantime. The 19th century doctor who first advocated washing one’s hands between patients, died  after being ignored and disgraced by the medical profession. Toxic mercury was used as medicine into the twentieth century. And so it has been.

Doctors ‘forced’ to overprescribe antidepressants By Sarah Bosely

Overprescribed Antidepressants

GPs know they are overprescribing antidepressant drugs such as Prozac and Seroxat, but believe the lack of other forms of help for those suffering from mild depression and stress leaves them no choice, a survey reveals today.

The survey shows that 80% of GPs believe they are writing too many prescriptions for the SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), as the class of drugs made famous by Prozac is known.

St John’s Wort Again Proven Better than Antidepressant Drugs

Food For Depression

The popular herbal extract St. John’s wort is more effective at treating the symptoms of depression than any antidepressant drug, and has fewer side effects, researchers from the Centre for Complementary Medicine in Munich have concluded.

“Overall, the St John’s Wort extracts tested in the trials were superior to placebo, similarly effective as standard anti-depressants, and had fewer side effects than standard anti-depressants,” lead researcher Klaus Linde said.

In a study published by the Cochrane Library, the researchers compiled the results of 29 prior trials, involving a total of 5,489 participants who were randomly assigned either St. John’s wort, a placebo, tricylclic antidepressants or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) to treat mild to moderately severe depression. All studies were double-blind, meaning that neither patients nor researchers knew what kind of treatment each participant was receiving.

The Dangers of Chemical Pollutants in Our Bodies

Synthetic chemicals are everywhere. Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring opened our eyes to this fact. Everyone has a toxic body burden. Everyone is contaminated with chemical pollutants, chemicals that at one time did not exist at all in nature, chemicals that have now become integral parts of nature. On average every human being carries more than 250 chemicals within their bodies.

The Power of Meditation

Benefits of Meditation

“Self-actualizing people must be what they can be”

Rather than starting at the beginning, I think it will be beneficial to start at the end. Let me describe what meditation will do for you.

Have you ever noticed the people who go through life as the lucky ones? They get all of the breaks. When you talk to them you realize how different they are compared to people living at ordinary levels of awareness. These people are connected to the genesis, the universal source of energy from which we all came. We all have that connection but some learn to control that connection better than others. Meditation will teach you how to control that connection.

What Are Enzymes

Proper Digestion

We’ve all seen a colony of ants.  All those little workers rushing around doing their jobs.  It seems so random, but they are each doing something very specific that needs to be done for the good of the whole colony.

That’s what I imagine enzymes to be like.  Enzymes are really proteins – hard working proteins.  They are catalysts that facilitate and speed up the different reactions in the body.  One of the jobs of digestive enzymes is to help break down the large molecules of fats, proteins, carbohydrates, and other components of the foods we eat.

If you experience gas, bloating, irregular bowels, burping, or other digestive discomforts after eating, you may be feeling the consequences of not enough digestive enzymes.  Having enough enzymes – all the different types – is key to good health.  Food is your body’s fuel and incomplete digestion and assimilation of that fuel leads to mal-nourishment at the cellular level.  If the cells aren’t healthy the whole body suffers.

Digestive enzymes are naturally produced within your body. We also get enzymes from raw foods.  Many children are eating lots of processed food on a daily basis.  Processed food, even the healthier versions, are lacking those essential enzymes, which are heat sensitive.

Including raw foods (foods that have not been heated above 118 degrees Fahrenheit) is important because the enzymes are still viable.

The average American diet is responsible for the development of chronic degenerative diseases such as heart disease, atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetes, stroke, etc. Why is diet so important for our health?  Because the food (and supplements) we consume provide our cells the nutrients to survive and function.  That’s why in holistic medicine we focus on the health of the gastro-intestinal (GI) tract, where the food is digested and assimilated into the body.

Throughout the GI tract, from the mouth through the intestines, enzymes are secreted from glands to help digest the fat, carbohydrates and proteins we eat.  We also consume enzymes through RAW food.  Enzymes are denatured (inactivated) by heat.  So the enzymes in cooked food lose their function, which is to increase the rates of chemical reactions within the body.

”Although the body can manufacture enzymes,
the more you use your enzyme potential,
the faster it is going to run out…”

– Dr. Edward Howell (Noted Pioneer in the field of Enzyme Research)

Supporting our body with RAW food, supports our enzyme supply.  Raw foods contain all the enzymes necessary for their own digestion.  Eating too much processed and cooked food and too little live, raw food can result in enzyme deficiencies.

There is research to support the health benefits of enzymes, for example:
Bromelain (an enzyme found in fresh pineapple) has been found to have anticoagulant and anti-inflammatory properties. Anti-inflammatory properties are huge since chronic inflammation has been linked to many diseases including allergies, asthma, heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Very Important: Enzymes rely on vitamins and minerals to function properly.

“Enzymes are complex proteins that act as catalysts in almost every biochemical process that takes place in the body. Their activity depends on the presence of adequate vitamins and minerals. Many enzymes incorporate a single molecule of a trace mineral —such as copper, iron or zinc —without which the enzyme cannot function.”
Sally Fallon and Mary G. Enig, PhD

Having a healthy body today is important. With the demands of an active lifestyle, energy is definitely an important thing to have. With just a few simple changes in the diet, it is possible to boost energy levels. Get more energy by getting into alkaline diet.

Most of us are in search of an effective diet that will promote a healthy body and increase energy levels.

Many diets are popular because of their promise to lose great amounts of weight in a short period of time. This is often achieved by dramatically reducing or totally eliminating a certain food group such as carbohydrates. Of course, depriving ourselves of something that our body is used to is a big challenge.

However, this is not the principle behind the breakthrough alkaline diet, which is also known as the alkaline ash diet, the alkaline acid diet and the acid alkaline diet. This diet allows moderate consumption of both alkaline-producing and acid-producing foods.

The typical Western diet includes meat, dairy, saturated fats, sugars, alcohol and caffeine. These foods can cause a build up of acid wastes in the body which is unhealthy. When there is a high level of acidity in the body, such an imbalance will most likely result in the creation of a perfect breeding ground for yeasts, fungus and molds as well as bacteria and viruses. Over-acidification will have adverse effects such as weight problems, allergies, fatigue, diabetes, heart problems and cancer.

When starting a diet, one of the main concerns is to understand the effects of the foods involved. The alkaline food chart has classified two main food groups which are the acid-producing foods and the alkaline-producing foods. The acid-producing group includes sugar, dairy products, meat, caffeine, high sugar fruits, saturated fats, processed foods, certain nuts, condiments and pasta. On the other hand, alkaline-producing foods include broccoli, celery, cucumber, spinach, asparagus, cabbage, certain nuts, avocados, carrots, basil, parsley, flaxseed oil, olive oil, lemons and grapefruit. The ideal daily intake of foods is 80% alkalizing and 20% acidifying.

It is necessary that this 80/20 balance be kept to maximize the benefits of the alkaline diet. This balance will regulate the body’s acid/alkaline chemistry. With just a few simple changes in the diet, it is possible to boost energy levels. Alongside an energy boost, you will also see the correct regulation of weight, an increase in stamina, more clarity in thinking, an improvement in the immune system and a greater sense of wellbeing.
